GPS Maps

Watching an old science fiction program like STAR TREK or VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA, one will see variants on what has become known as the Global Positioning System maps. Now, when these programs first aired in the 1960’s, creatures such as GPS maps were considered purely the realm of imaginative writers and would not ever exist as a legitimate product. Even when these sci fi programs moved on to television syndication in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s, GPS maps were still something that was considered part of a fantasy realm. GPS maps were products that people wished existed as opposed to products that actually exist. Now, today, this has all changed as these maps have become a legitimate invention and a clear indication of human knowledge and skill.

Like any other tool, maps of this sort exist because they have been built upon the previous incarnations of maps that can before it. As the world moved from an agricultural based society into a technological society, the ability to produce maps evolved as well. That is, maps could be mass produced as opposed to hand drawn or crafted. Now, as our world moves from an industrial world and into a technological on, map making moves with it and GPS maps are the result of such technological innovation.

This, of course, does not mean that GPS maps will automatically allow someone to find their way out of being lost in the middle of the California mountains if they parachute into it, it does mean that the new innovations in map making make the ability to read maps much more accessible to those who may not be all that familiar with map reading. This can have a host of benefits including ones that may very well be lifesaving. So, certainly, the emergence and innovation of maps are highly appreciated.
